As I was saying...
I'm back!
I spent the last year and a half living in Europe and editing a vocabulary textbook. At least the dollar seems to be recovering and the euro seems to be dropping which is fabulous news for us travelers. I don't know how much longer you folks can keep me here.
Moving right along...
This is the year of O-bama! O-bama! O-bama! I think its fairly ridiculous. In a sane political environment this fellow wouldn't stand a flea's chance at an exterminator convention. Not that I don't love the fact that he thinks he "represents" the future of America. I'm very glad that he is secure enough in his person-hood to take on the crushingly heavy burden of also being a symbol for everyone's hopes and dreams.
And I think there are enough people gullible enough to take the socialist pill if its dressed up in a new wrapper, all sparkly, shiny, and filled with chocolate-sprinkled goodness.
Americans aren't socialist, they're good hard-working sensible people who believe that everyone ought to have the right to live their lives as they choose without undue interference. If they were told exactly what a socialist agenda entailed, I'm sure there would be far fewer people at Obama rallies. Raising taxes on families which make $42,000 a year or more isn't likely to win the support in Anytown, USA. Sending a "guilt tax" of 800 billion dollars to the U.N. to punish us for our prosperity isn't likely to get many votes. We're four percent of the world's population, and we're responsible for 99% of the world's safety and security. We're also one of the most generous nations the world has ever seen. We have absolutely no reason to feel guilty. "White folks greed {does not} run{s} a world in need," Obama! American generosity, of all colors, feeds the hungry, heals the sick, and fosters democracy around the world. So you see, Obama, your "message" might be attractive, vapid as it is, but your policies will be a disaster. America will only accept socialism if it comes in the guise of populism, and that's what you're banking on, isn't it Obama?
That's not to say that there aren't genuine socialists out there who know what socialism is and what it does and who have gone over the pros and cons in their mind and find themselves in support of it. These people, who have come to the intellectual opinion that socialism is best are wrong, but I can appreciate their opinions.
Supposedly, a majority of Americans are in favor of censorship via the fairness doctrine. I don't believe this for a moment. Americans just like the word fair, and fairness is such a nice thing, isn't it? After all, we're about equal opportunity these days, aren't we? If the average Joe American knew that the government would be given authority to meddle in the free speech of the media and that this would soon devolve into personal censorship, there would be rebellions in the streets!
But no, fairness is such a nice word.
Never mind that about 40% of people polled want the government to police and censor blogs and message boards on the internet. If something DOESN'T work in Canada, you can be sure there will be liberals here trying to force it down our throats in five or ten years (like the Human Rights [Censorship] Commission). WE'RE GIVING AWAY OUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH, PEOPLE!
I'm worried, and I have a right to be. The choice I'll have to make in November is between a left-of-centrist, and a screaming socialist. The great difference is that I am convinced the former will take more seriously the threat of terrorism, and will handle himself appropriately on the world stage. The other has unrepentant terrorists for buddies, and doesn't seem to worry much about the 11,661 terrorist attacks that have occurred around the world since 9-11. After all, Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela are much smaller than the Soviet Union and pose no serious threat.
With the recent events concerning Russia, how many of you actually think that they wouldn't attempt some kind of Cuba missile folly?
Would our grandparents or parents vote for a man who, during World War II, associated with Nazi sympathizers or Soviet spies? I mean, this is just common sense, right?
This mass hysteria has me concerned for our nation's sanity and judgment.
